Sistema Hundidero - Gato
Caving
The Sierra de las Nieves lies in a large area of karst containing numerous caves and potholes including Sima GESM with a depth of 1101m. The Hundidero–Gato system is an hours drive away which provides a sporting 4½km through trip for experienced cavers.
An experience not to be missed is the showcave “Cueva de la Pileta” near Benaojan which contains numerous paleolithic cave paintings. Another showcave is the “cueva de Tesoro” at Rincon de la Victoria near Malaga which is believed to be a prehistoric sanctuary of the Moon Goddess Noctiluca.
If any cavers would like more information on the caves of the area please contact us.
Walking
The Sierra de Las Nieves national park (declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1995) offers a wide variety of walks with spring and autumn being the best times of year. There are several walks starting from the village which range from gentle walks through orange groves and forests of Andalusian Pine, the ‘Pinsapo’, which only grows here and  northern Morrocco, to more strenuous mountain walks which afford spectacular views. Maps of the area and suggested walks can be found in the house.
Many of these can be seen without venturing from the village. Yunquera is on the migration route between Europe and Africa with northern migrations taking place between mid-February and June, (during April the village is a haven for swallows), while those birds heading south will set off between late July and early November. Ornironda offer wildlife and trekking trips. A days birdwatching for 2-4 people costs 34 Euros per person.
Organised Adventures
Canyoning, hiking tours, mountain biking, horse riding, rock climbing and jeep adventures can be arranged through Exploramas who will collect you from the village for bookings of four of more people.
